Deaf Silent Village Theatre
Addis Ababa Deaf Silent Village is a sign language theater and dance group. The group is a subdivision of Addis Ababa. It is important for everyone to have a regular, healthy and complete access to everyday activities and hobbies that are not dependent on a strong economy.
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when deaf theatre began in Ethiopia, but there are some indications that there were a few theatres that had been accomplished. These theatres were run and performed by deaf people in several schools, churches and deaf associations.
In 1987 E.C, with the help of 5 deaf and 1 hearing persons, had performances that initiated the establishment of «BETESEB Deaf Theatre and Art Club».
In a very short time this club gained popularity in the Ethiopian Deaf Association movement, and even got the opportunity to perform a series of dramas on television.
Performing until 1991, this club has come to an end and then was reestablished under another name BEZA Deaf Theatre and Art Club. Unfortunately, it was shut down after a short period of time.
Now, new performances with three amazing actors have received wonderful acclaims from both sign language users and people who do not use sign language. The performing theater is full of visual and comedy. The targeted age group is for children and family. The performance storyline is about two big guys and a little guy. The two big guys are not as smart as they think they are and tries to trick the little guy. Unfortunately, the little guy is not as stupid as they think he is and tricks them back. In the performance, there are slapsticks, contact with the audience, magic tricks, colorful costumes and lots of laughter. The performance does not include words, just visual-based and with mime.
